Eli & The 13th Confession - MOVLP248
Nyro, Laura
The New York-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro achieved considerable critical acclaim with her own recordings and had commercial success with artists such as Barbra Streisand and The 5th Dimension recording her songs.
Her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, show tunes, rock and soul.
'Eli and the 13th Confession' is her second album, originally released in 1968, being one of the year's underground successes.
The album's themes are of passion, love, romance, death, and drugs, and the songs are delivered in Nyro's distinctive brash neo-operatic vocals.
Musically, it is a multi-layered and opulent work, with features including a band, multi-tracked vocals, jazz instrumentation and strings.
Nyro premiered some of the songs at the legendary 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.
